He married a french woman named Marie-Pascale Daudet, whom later died in 1897, he never married again.

When he was young he joined the cadet corps and was educated at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt, where he developed an interest in natural science, especially in Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

In the year 1871, at age 19, he received a commission as an officer in a Jäger battalion. After graduating from the Kriegsschule military academy in 1876, he was then transferred to the General Staff of the Austro-Hungarian Army.

Ludolf was also a close personal friend of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, for being an adviser to Franz Joseph II, it was his responsibility to ensure Franz Ferdinand was to become the next Emperor and King to Austria-Hungary. When the archduke was killed by the Serbian terrorist Gavrilo Princip, Ludolf soon led the armies of the Austro-Hungarians against the Serbians and Imperial Russians.

Ludolf's success for Karl I being Emperor was pleasant but Ludolf had a bigger issue the Italian Front. Ludolf heard rumors of a deadly Italian-American soldier who was in the Italian Army that killed over 250 men. To ensure that the Italian armies were defeated he contacted his German Allies for support.

He faced a small conflict between his niece Heike who was disguised as a man, but he felt sorry for her of downgrading her and Lorenz. He didn't wish to see his niece suffer the war, he himself taught her how to play a violin. At the end, he was proud for his niece, but he will never get to see her become what he dreamed of her becoming.
